The state of Illinois is trying to solve a mystery that's happening across the state right now. There is a mass die-off of birds and they need your help in fully understanding exactly what's going on.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources just issued a press release where they say they are "monitoring a large event of waterfowl mortality at numerous locations throughout Illinois". They believe this is result of the widespread bird flu outbreak.

Illinois is warning that if you see 5 or more deceased birds, you need to report it to the Department of Natural Resources. The state says you should not touch or pick up any dead birds you find, but report the event instead.

Is this bird flu dangerous to humans in Illinois?

Here's what the statement from the state of Illinois says:

"While avian influenza generally poses a low risk to the population, it is essential to take the necessary steps to avoid exposure, and to seek treatment quickly if you are exposed," said IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra. "We encourage all Illinoisans to follow the advice of the experts at IDNR in order to avoid contact with sick birds, and to take any potential exposure seriously."

This large bird mortality event is also being watched in Missouri.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources bulletin says poultry in the state are also experiencing bird flu issues. The state is urging caution around deceased birds especially during this migration time and seeking more information about how widespread this bird die-off really is.
