Missouri Fire Department Warns of Secret Danger Near Your AC Unit
A Missouri Fire Department issued a stern warning about an issue they've seen that may have caused several recent house fires. It's a potential danger that might be behind your air conditioning unit right now.
Just a few days ago, the St. Charles, Missouri Fire Department shared this warning on their Facebook page.
The surge protector they're talking about is the SUPCO SCM150. The St. Charles, Missouri Fire Department is right about the fact there was a replacement offer, but that expired back in July of 2019 according to a statement on their site.
The company states that the manufacturer of the surge protectors does not believe there is valid proof they are defective, but SUPCO recommends they be uninstalled and replaced if at all possible. They believe that "failure of the SCM Devices can occur if a floating neutral - from a bad ground bonding during installation". Translation? They're saying the surge protectors were installed wrong and that is why there is a potential risk of fire.
The bottom line is you really need to check the surge protector near your air conditioner and make sure it's not the model mentioned by the St. Charles, Missouri Fire Department. Perhaps it's purely coincidence that they've noticed these surge protectors at recent fires - or maybe not. Don't risk it.
