Folklore tells us that when it comes to weather in Missouri in March, if the month begins like a lion, it will go out like a lamb. Not sure if that's true, but all indications are that energy is building up to start off next month with something significant.

As of this writing, there are still 9 days remaining in February. That means you cannot reliably predict any precipitation for March at this point. That being said, you can look at patterns in the atmosphere that can give you an indication of what might be just around the corner.

Let's start with the good news. NOAA's Climate Prediction Center shows that Missouri should see a warming trend for the rest of February.

So why is the start of March in Missouri somewhat concerning?

Weather with Travis today noticed what appears to be another cooldown coming in early March which what looks like the traditional area where winter storms load up to the west.

There are computer models that seem to be identifying that and are starting to show big precipitation on our around March 5. It could still be warm enough to be rain at that point or it might not happen at all. I'm not gonna share a map of that model because I don't want to infer that it's likely or even something to watch out for. What I am saying is be aware that March looks like it could (as folklore says) come in like a lion. Whether that's a rain lion or a snow lion or nothing remains to be seen.
