Most earthquakes in the New Madrid seismic zone in Missouri are not felt. The quake that struck Wednesday was and registers as one of 2023's most intense quake felt by hundreds.

The USGS has reviewed and confirmed the quake that struck at approximately 11:46am central time Wednesday, December 27, 2023. This is the felt report by the USGS where as of this writing 177 felt this tremor along the New Madrid, Missouri area near the bootheel. It registered a 3.8 magnitude on the Richter Scale.

This 3.8 is the largest Missouri quake along the New Madrid fault since a 2.9 that struck back in October. This is not an intense enough quake to normally cause damage although it's more than strong enough to be felt, so the hundreds who have reported it is not surprising.

No reports of damage and don't expect any, but this article will be updated if new information arises.

UPDATE: USGS has upgraded the New Madrid quake today to 3.8 magnitude and story has been updated to reflect that.
