What do you have planned for the 4th of July? BBQ? Hanging with friends and/or family? For one Payson, Illinois man, he'll be serving America aboard a US Navy warship.

Thanks to the US Navy for allowing me to share the story of Command Master Chief Seth Miles. He's one of many who are serving the country on the USS Constitution.

“It's a family tradition,” said Miles. “My grandfather was a Pearl Harbor survivor. My father was in the Air Force during Vietnam. I just wanted to continue the tradition of military service.”

Serving on the USS Constitution itself is quite an honor as there are few ships currently active that have the history this vessel does.

Command Master Chief Seth Miles explained that his home in Payson, Illinois has been key to why he chose to serve the country.

I grew up in a farm town with a lot of hard workers,” said Miles. “I learned perseverance. I brought that into my Navy career and it's helped me succeed.

It's easy to take for granted the freedom we all enjoy especially as many will relax over the 4th of July weekend. Good to remember there are many like Seth who won't be home for the holiday. Instead they serve to keep us free by choice and that should always be honored.

Thanks again to the US Navy for reaching out and allowing us to share Seth's experiences here near his home in Payson.
