If you were one one Illinois interstate at the wrong time earlier this week, you know that traffic was brought to a standstill by a sudden dirt storm that overwhelmed traffic.

This wild wind/dirt event happened on Tuesday on I-55 at milepost 144 near McLean according to the Illinois State Police. ABC 7 out of Chicago shared video shared with them by a driver caught in the middle of it all.

The Illinois State Police then shared this warning on X/Twitter that resulted in the highway in that region being closed for a period of time.

CBS News reported that not only I-55 was closed for awhile, but also Interstate 74 in Illinois due to this sudden dirt/wind event. You might recall that this was the same area of Illinois interstate that suffered a tragic dirt storm event last year that resulted in many fatalities.

The unfortunate reality is that dirt/dust storms in this part of Illinois can occur with very little warning. If you regularly drive on I-55 or I-74 in Illinois, it's best to always be prepared for the unexpected. It happens more often than you might think.
