The good news is it will not affect most of the state, but there will be parts of Illinois where traveling could become a challenge due to expected wind-whipped snow beginning later Thursday.

I saw this alert shared by the National Weather Service in Illinois earlier today which mentions incoming lake-effect weather that will make travel not fun for some starting after 3pm Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service forecast for Chicago, Illinois, it won't be snow amounts to be concerned about as much as the wind. As the periods of snow after 3pm will be accompanied by 20mph wind gusts, that's why travel could be a concern for some.

To emphasize, this is not expected to be a widespread weather system affecting most of Illinois, but mainly those traveling around or near Lake Michigan in northeastern Illinois into northwestern Indiana.

Watch out as this weather carries over into the Friday, December 20 morning commute as the wind could gust up to 35 mph in places making whatever precipitation happening even more hazardous even if the amounts don't add up to much.
