Illinois Town Swamped by Torrential 13-Inch Downpour
It would be a remarkable amount of rain even if it were spread out over a month, but for one tiny Illinois town, it happened just over a 24-hour period. The small Illinois community has been confirmed to have received more than 13 inches of rain in such a short time.
This remarkable rain total was just shared by the National Weather Service in St. Louis, Missouri. In today's weather story, they shared rainfall amounts for east-central Missouri and west-central Illinois. Notice that the tiny town at the top was drenched with several inches more than anywhere else.
Brownstown, Illinois is south of Springfield and east of the St. Louis area with a population of only 690 people according to the last census.
It was this rainfall that started on July 20 and continued through July 21 that caused the dramatic flash flooding event.
The good news is the next few days appear to be dry for this part of Illinois. The bad news is that the moisture is being replaced by intense heat with indexes expected to top the triple digits through at least Thursday. There should be some relief by the weekend, but until then it's deal with the flooding aftermath and the incoming heat.
