As I contemplate this new thing I've learned, it's hard to believe that we're just over a month away from the start of Fall. I suppose that's why a new ranking has appeared featuring the best towns in America for the Fall months and one of the top 16 is in Illinois.

As I write this, parts of Illinois are still under an extreme heat advisory. That's why it's hard to wrap my head around a new ranking from Cheapism of the 16 best Fall towns in America. One of them is in Illinois and I'm not surprised by that at all.

This is the view of the gorgeous downtown area of Galena, Illinois which is definitely a looker during the Fall months. Frankly, I'd put this quaint Illinois place at the top of most lists no matter if it's Spring, Summer, Winter or Fall. The ranking loved the "19th-century buildings, shops, restaurants, and historic sites, while the countryside of northwest Illinois adds rolling roads and fall color" and that's accurate. The truth is that Galena has become one of the best weekend getaway options in the state year-round.

What is there to do in Galena, Illinois?

The list of Galena options is long. There are numerous scenic overlooks in the Galena area where you can get a great look at the river, trees, etc. There are ziplines, ghost tours and you could easily lose a day shopping the downtown shops. I've heard you can even hike through the countryside accompanied by therapy goats and I'm not even making that up. The fact that Galena is extra pretty during the Fall is just a nice bonus to what's already there.
