Everyone has different ideas about what makes a city or town great to live in or not, but most would likely agree that safety is the one factor that all have as a priority. That's why I've put together a new list of the top Illinois places where you're less likely to become a victim.

I want to note that this is not a quality of life ranking. I didn't incorporate any metrics from places rated for online reviews of whether these Illinois cities and towns were good to live in. I queried the latest crime data from the FBI and security sites like SafeWise to determine the Illinois locations where you're less likely to become a victim. One of the towns on this list reported zero crimes over the past year which is exceptional.

"Safety" means different things to different people. Some just look at violent crime rates while others want to know that they won't become a pickpocket target if they go shopping downtown. I focused on the likelihood of violent crime happening to residents in each of these Illinois places which is how the ranking eventually took shape. At the end of the day, you want a place where you and those you care about can live their lives without an imminent fear of harm. In Illinois, there are no better places than those on this list.
