When is it Legally Too Early to Mow Your Grass in Illinois?
It's that time of year when each of us will start asking the eternal question of how early you can start mowing your grass. In Illinois, there are specific laws you need to know about or you could be mowing yourself into a law-breaking fine.
The most popular conversation I can find about this yard maintenance issue is still getting comments on Reddit to this day.
Before I share what I've learned, know that I am NOT a lawyer and am not giving you legal advice. I have family members that are (and are infinitely smarter than me), but if you take anything I share as legal counsel, you're out of your mind (and I mean that in a kind way).
One of the most in-depth answers I can find is from the website Eufy. In Illinois and most other places, the generally accepted time for mowing your yard is from 7am until dark. There are exceptions however. I've seen it reported that Quincy, Illinois allows yard mowing from 8am until 8pm and any mowing outside of that time is more or less frowned upon.
In some communities with homeowner associations, their charters govern when you can and can't mow your grass. Some ask that you wait until 9am to begin mowing and stop no later than sunset.
I used to work an overnight shift and it was frustrating to try and get to sleep when someone nearby is cranking up their mower. The yard maintenance challenge is real.
