Salvation Army Names Their Volunteer of The Year
The Salvation Army has announced their recipient of the 2020 Volunteer of the Year Award. This year’s award was posthumously given to Robert Sapp. For over 25 years Robert volunteered with The Salvation Army in a variety of areas including in the food pantry, during special events, and during the Christmas season as a bell ringer. He passed away unexpectedly on Christmas day in 2020.
Robert particularly enjoyed volunteering in the Social Services Department where he would help with handing out items on the breadline and enjoyed delivering Christmas food baskets to those without transportation. Robert played a big part in helping when the Emergency Shelter moved from Quincy University to the new building on Broadway.
“Robert consistently was the first to raise his hand to volunteer.” According to The Salvation Army Area Coordinator Captain Michael Sjogren. On a personal note, as a member of the Quincy Exchange Club, I remember Robert for years was always willing to assist the club members in doing whatever was needed during many years of the Gus Macker Basketball Tournament. And he did so with a smile. He will be missed.
The award was presented to his brother, Joseph Sapp, and sister, Melissa Attey, at The Salvation Army church service yesterday (Sunday, April 18).
Even though he is gone, Robert would love to know that might step up and volunteer where needed at the Salvation Army. Volunteer opportunities are available at the Salvation Army in both Quincy and Hannibal.
