Even the most seasoned meteorologist will tell you it's hard to predict winter weather especially when it's not even close to winter yet. There are many in Illinois that believe you can know what the upcoming winter will be like, but first you need to pet a cow. Really.

My grandmother and most of her side of the family were dairy farmers. I suppose that's why I tend to be partial to cows providing vital weather information and I'm not alone in that emotion. Farmer's Almanac also believes that cows can help you discern what winter will be like long before winter gets here.

How can an Illinois cow possibly forecast the weather?

First, you need to pet the cow. Go ahead. I'll wait here.

What? Back already? Let me ask you a question about that cow petting experience. Did you feel thick hair at the base of the cow's neck? Yes? Then prepare for a harsh winter. The farmers say that a thick amount of hair at the bottom of a cow's neck is a sure sign that nature is preparing the animal for colder than usual conditions.

Now, go ask the cow about snow? I'll wait here.

You're back and they said nothing? I knew that would happen, but just wanted to see if you'd be willing to ask a cow about snow.
