Missouri Winter May Bring Sudden Snow Squalls, Almanac Says

As I write this, most of Missouri is under a serious heat advisory. That's why I find the timing ironic that Farmer's Almanac has just issued their outlook for the upcoming winter months of the rest of 2026 into early 2027. They say Missouri, in particular, could see sudden snow squalls along with some other "surprises". I don't like that word when it's applied to winter weather things.

You can see the entire Farmer's Almanac 2026/2027 Winter Forecast for yourself, but I'll be glad to summarize the best parts that apply to Missouri and our part of America in general. They say that the Midwest including Missouri "could experience sudden snow squalls, blustery winds, and bursts of bitter cold". I can hear many saying "well, duh" because Missouri sees those elements every winter and those many are not wrong. However, there is something else in their winter outlook that could be different and encouraging.

Because of the anticipation of El Niño influencing the upcoming winter, Farmer's Almanac is predicting wetter than normal conditions across the southern part of America. That could (key word) mean that the storm tracks will often stay to the south of Missouri which could (key word, again) mean that there will be milder weather interrupting any "sudden snow squalls, blustery winds and bursts of winter cold" that impact Missouri. I'm very much in favor of cold bursts and snow squalls getting interrupted.

I noticed that Weather With Travis, who just issued his winter outlook recently, seems to agree with the southern moisture track that the Farmer's Almanac thinks will happen.

Let's face it. Missouri's winters are always unpredictable. Geographically, the state tends to be a battleground between different storm systems and tracks. I've lost count of how many times that Missouri was right on the edge of a huge winter snowstorm or practically nothing. I expect nothing less this upcoming winter, too.

Now, back to that intense heat advisory for the next few days.
