Is New Madrid Fault Waking Up? – All the Missouri Quakes in April
If you follow earthquake activity in Missouri, you probably know already that it's been a relatively quiet year so far along the New Madrid Seismic Zone. That could be changing as the tremors confirmed in April show that the fault in southern Missouri may be waking up.
I keep a close eye on the USGS earthquake page just to make sure the New Madrid isn't misbehaving. Yes, I realize that if a big quake struck, I would feel it under my feet in my Missouri home, but it's the minor and moderate stuff in the southern part of the state I like to be aware of.
Here's what the past 30 days of New Madrid quakes looks like in Missouri.
While there was nothing earth-shaking (literally) as far as big magnitudes, many were felt in southern Missouri.
There are signs that activity along the New Madrid Fault may be increasing. There were some days this past week when there were consecutive days of quakes. There's no way to know if this is a lead-up to a larger event, but the ebb and flow of New Madrid quakes is an interesting thing to watch.
