Missouri’s New Madrid Fault Saw More Activity This October
If you look at the month of October along the New Madrid Fault in southern Missouri, you'll see an interesting uptick in activity including some tremors in unusual places.
The New Madrid Seismic Zone is one of the most active faults in America
I keep close tabs on the latest earthquakes that are confirmed by the USGS every day. Along with the constant daily updates, you can search their database for the number of quakes in an area over the last 30 days or more. I queried their data and asked for a summary of all of the New Madrid Fault quakes during the month of October and here's what it showed me.
From October 1, 2025 through October 31, 2025, there were a grand total of 32 earthquakes associated with the New Madrid Fault confirmed by USGS seismologists. That is slightly above average compared to a normal month, but not by a lot. The strangest New Madrid quake in October would have to be the 2.2 magnitude tremor on the 28th that was located near Ozora, Missouri. You don't see quakes northwest of Cape Girardeau very often. That being said, there's nothing in the number or location of New Madrid quakes in October that should cause you extra concern. It was just a slightly more active month than normal which caught my attention. I would prefer if the New Madrid Fault would continue to release pressure with tiny quakes like what we saw in October instead of a major event that we know will happen someday.
