I was expecting something like this to happen after the massive Russian quake earlier this week. The New Madrid Fault has responded with one of southern Missouri's strongest quakes of 2025, but it was not large enough to do any kind of damage.

UPDATE: This Friday quake was followed by a stronger magnitude 3.0 tremor that was reportedly felt by many.

ORIGINAL STORY: I was looking at the USGS earthquake site this morning and noticed a larger than usual circle in the boot heel of Missouri. Don't misunderstand. This is not a major quake. It's not even a moderate tremor, but it does rank among the top 10 quakes in the region for 2025. According to the USGS seismologists that have confirmed this, it was a 2.6 magnitude quake just south of the Missouri boot heel at 4:11am Friday, August 1.

I queried the USGS database and confirmed this is one of the top 10 strongest New Madrid quakes of 2025. Normally, I wouldn't bother to share a quake that's not at least a 3 in magnitude, but I figured that the New Madrid Fault would eventually respond to the monstrous 8.8 magnitude Russian quake that happened a few days ago and I wonder if this is that. When you factor in the YouTube channel that predicted the Russian quake just 3 days before it happened also claims the New Madrid Fault is due for a major quake, I thought this was worth mentioning and watching. I will add that I have researched that YouTube channel and it appears they have made lots of predictions that have NOT come true, so let's hope that's the case with what they've said about the fault in southern Missouri.
