This is how some horror movies begin. A very strange earthquake has now been confirmed by the USGS and it happened near a graveyard in Illinois.

I did a double-take when I saw the USGS shake map showing an earthquake in a part of Illinois where I have never remembered seeing a quake. It was a 2.4 magnitude tremor near Mount Carmel, Illinois in the extreme southeastern part of the state.

I want you to pay attention to something. Look at the "Felt Report" above. No one in that part of Illinois felt it. Wanna know why? Because it happened near a graveyard from what I can tell according to the location given. Shiver.

I don't believe we can blame this quake on the New Madrid Fault. This would be more in the wheelhouse of the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone which is capable of a greater than 7 magnitude quake, by the way.

Considering how potentially volatile the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone can be, I'm surprised we don't see more quakes in that part of Illinois. If I'm allowed to choose, I'd prefer the next one not be centered near a graveyard though. Thanks.
