There's a lot to be said about the value of a place when its downtown has many things within easy walking distance. If you want to do that in Missouri, the best place you'll find that matches that description is a quaint town along legendary Route 66.

This is downtown Carthage, Missouri which World Atlas just named the most walkable downtown of any place in Missouri. Carthage has a lot going for it. Along with being the county seat of Jasper County, Missouri, Carthage has the a ton of history including the Civil War Museum. The fact that much of the downtown area looks like it did 60 years ago is a great thing. Nearly all of the buildings have character and many businesses continue to thrive in this downtown area of Missouri.

The big city (or bigger city) isn't far away with Springfield an easy hour's drive to the east and Joplin even closer to the southwest. The fact that it's along Route 66 makes it an easy choice for a stop there if you're making that legendary road a part of your summer adventures.
