If you live in or near Hannibal, Missouri, there is one issue that I guarantee you have an opinion on. Do you think there should be a bypass built to lessen the traffic on Highway 61 and, if so, who should pay for it? This debate has erupted into the hottest topic online in northeast Missouri right now.

Let me start off by saying that I am not a politician and I am also rarely the smartest person in any room I walk into. That's why I will not be trying to convince you one way or another how to feel or vote on the Highway 61 bypass project when it appears on the ballot next month. However, I will point you to some of the places where this debate is raging, but before I do that, let's clear up exactly what is being discussed.

What is the Highway 61 bypass project?

If it's passed in April, an expressway would be built between Palmyra and New London, Missouri with construction starting in 2031. It would take Highway 61 traffic away from Hannibal meaning McMasters Avenue would no longer be a part of this vital north-south route.

What is the controversy?

Those who want the bypass project pass say it will make traffic through Hannibal safer and much less congested. Those against it worry that it will kill business in Hannibal that relies on this traffic to succeed. There's also the debate from many who don't believe that Ralls County voters should be required to pay for an issue that concerns safety in Hannibal which is Marion County obviously.

There are several places where I'm seeing the most discussions. There is the Hwy 61 Hannibal Bypass Facebook group (which is a public group) and there's the Yes on Prop 61 Facebook group (which is a political organization). There's also Prop 61 Impact to Hannibal Facebook page. There may be others and I'll be glad to add them to this if I'm made aware of them. I'm seeing much of this raging debate on both sides spilling into my regular Facebook feed as well.

I grew up in Hannibal, Missouri and yes I have opinions, but I truly respect both sides of this issue. Traffic on McMasters Avenue has only gotten worse over the years and there have been many terrible accidents. It's a real problem, but there's also a very real business cause and effect that will take place if this bypass is enacted.  Will this half-cent sales tax pass when it gets voted on April 7, 2026? I have no idea, but the one thing I'm sure of is the debate online will continue to get hotter the closer we get to that day.
