Missouri in for a Soaking—8 Inches of Rain Possible
The good news is that all of Missouri will not need to build an ark. The bad news is that there really are some parts of the state that are expected to see up to 8 inches of rainfall by the time the Memorial Day weekend is over.
I saw this remarkable rainfall estimate shared by the National Weather Service in Springfield, Missouri on their Facebook/Meta page just a few hours ago. It shows rainfall amounts that appear to be especially troublesome for the southwestern parts of Missouri.
Most of Missouri will only experience a couple inches of badly needed rain. It's the places in the state where there will be pockets of up to 8 inches of rain that are concerning. Successful Farming also shared the expected rainfall in Missouri where 5 inches of rain will not be unusual. Note that the National Weather Service says confidence is high for flooding and many parts of southwestern Missouri will need to be prepared as exact locations of flooding are unknown right now.
How will the Memorial Day weekend rainfall affect the ongoing drought in Missouri?
Unfortunately, the US Drought Monitor shows that the worst drought problems in Missouri exist in the northern parts of the state where only light rain amounts are expected.
According to the National Weather Service, the deluge of rain is expected to start in southwestern Missouri beginning Friday night and continuing all the way through Memorial Day Monday. If you live in any of the southwestern counties in Missouri, be prepared for potential flash flooding events and make sure you're weather aware - again.
