Illinois Faces Strong Tornado Threat Monday, Experts Say
Many are already aware that strong storms are possible over much of Missouri and Illinois at the start of the week, but everyone should now be aware that the tornado threat is growing and that's especially true of Illinois.
I have seen many storm chasers mentioning their plans to be in northeast Missouri and parts of Illinois Monday which led me to check the NOAA Storm Prediction Center update and there's reason for their travel plans. Look at the updated convective outlook map that now includes parts of Missouri and all of Illinois in an enhanced risk of severe storms for Monday, April 27, 2026.
The yellow hatched area should be especially vigilant on Monday for dangerous supercell development. The exact words of the meteorologists from the Storm Prediction Center says "strong tornadoes, damaging wind gusts and large hail" are expected. They add that "a few strong, and particularly damaging tornadoes possible".
If you'd like to do a deep dive into why the conditions Monday look favorable for fast and dangerous storm development, Convective Chronicles on YouTube does an excellent job explaining all the factors and why everyone in Missouri and Illinois needs to be weather aware.
There is a scenario where storms won't be as strong Monday afternoon
If you see thunderstorms during the morning hours, that might (key word) make storms that develop later Monday to be less severe. Sunshine during the morning creates heat which leads to storm fuel. No sunshine in the morning means less storm energy to build on later in the day. That would be a good thing.
The storms are expected to start developing Monday afternoon along a dry line that extends throughout the advisory areas in Missouri and Illinois. I've seen some mentioning the similarity to conditions during the big tornado outbreak of 2003 and I won't dive into that, but Monday really is a day where you should take weather watches and warnings especially serious.
