Illinois Suddenly Under Severe Storm Threat Midweek
Stop me if you've heard me say this before, but yet again Illinois is included in a risk area that storm forecasters suddenly believe will be impacted by midweek.
As of a couple days ago, the NOAA Storm Prediction Center had Missouri in a warned area for Tuesday, June 17 and Wednesday, June 18. This morning, I saw internet weather celebrity Ryan Hall mention that the advisory area for Wednesday now includes nearly all of Illinois. I checked the convective outlook and confirmed that is now accurate.
What does it mean for Illinois to be covered by the yellow advisory area for Wednesday, June 18, 2025?
If you live or plan to travel through the area of Illinois under this advisory, it means you have a 15% chance of seeing a severe thunderstorm within 25 miles of any point within that yellow warned area. Based on how I've watched these advisories play out, you can count on some level of severe thunderstorms in Illinois by midweek. No real question about it. The real threat is not expected to be tornadoes, but strong winds and hail will be the most common factors to deal with.
Normally peak thunderstorm season in Illinois is the Spring months. This year it doesn't appear that severe thunderstorms will be giving Illinois a summer break.
