Illinois Police Corruption Crackdown Arrests Former City Manager
The long arm of the law in Illinois is seeking to combat public corruption and that effort has led to the arrest of a former city manager in East St. Louis.
The Illinois State Police just announced that their Criminal Investigation Special Investigations Unit has escalated their efforts to fight public corruption. Their latest case was assisted by the Saint Clair County State’s Attorney. The result was the arrest of 60-year-old Carlos Mayfield of East St. Louis, Illinois.
Back in early April, the Illinois State Police learned there were allegations of theft and official misconduct by Mr. Mayfield. They say " special agents found evidence Mayfield knowingly used City of East St. Louis funds for personal gain". The warrant for his arrest was issued on October 1, 2024. He reportedly just surrendered on November 15, 2024.
The Illinois State Police say 60-year-old Carlos Mayfield has been charged with "one count of Theft $500-$10,000 of Government Property (Class 2 Felony) and one count of Fraudulent Use of a Credit/Debit Card (Class 4 Felony)".
They emphasize that the charges are not evidence of guilt until proven in a court of law. The Criminal Investigation Special Investigations Unit of the Illinois State Police is increasing the effort to reduce public waste by following up allegations of improprieties.
