Have you ever had one of those nightmares where you feel like the darkness is trying to attack you? What if you realized that you weren't really asleep and the forces coming after you weren't from your imagination? That really happened to a Missouri man who had a real showdown with demonic forces and I can prove the story is true.

The night started like any other. It was the summer of 1991 and Missouri humidity inspired open windows to allow a breeze to blow through the house. The work day had been long, so it was an ideal evening to try and grab some extra sleep. He was alone in the house. Or, so he thought.

"Someone or something is in the house"

The attempt at sleep began with tossing and turning. The heat wasn't helping, but the sound of the breeze was comforting. The effort to clear his mind was working and it seemed like sleep might be imminent. It was nearly midnight. That's when he heard footsteps.

The house he lived in had wooden floors which made the sound of anyone walking very distinct. The bedroom he was trying to fall asleep in was at the end of a hallway. He was facing away from the hallway and could hear the footsteps getting closer. He was afraid to turn over and see what was in the hallway.

Then the voices started

He had kept a knife under the bed in the event of an intruder, so he decided he would try to slowly turn over where he could reach the knife without clueing in whatever was in the hallway to the fact that he was awake and arming himself. As he finally completed his turn over, he was terrified at what he saw in the hallway. There was no one there.

What should have been relief turned into panic

The slow footsteps down the hallway now became loud steps of running combined with insanely evil demonic laughter. The steps were circling the bed he was in and he found himself completely frozen. He couldn't talk. He couldn't yell. He couldn't scream. He was at the mercy of whatever was in the room.

He did the only thing he knew to try. He prayed and asked God to deliver him. Immediately the sound of running and the laughter stopped. He laid there still for at least a few minutes in a pool of sweat trying to figure out what he had just experienced. Soon after, the phone rang as one of his friends had called to check on him. It was obvious to him that he really had been awake the entire time. This was no bad dream. The sounds, the laughter, the terror had all been real.

How do I know this story is 100% true?

The Missouri man in the story is me. I lived it more than 30 years ago and the events of that night are as clear to me today as they were then. I've shared my testimony about that night only to a few select friends over the years and a few have laughed, which I understand. It's an outrageous account, but those that truly know me understand that I don't make up stuff like this.

Some call what I experienced night terrors. My belief is that for whatever reason the veil to the supernatural was lifted that summer night in 1991 and I was allowed to see the real evil that wanted to destroy me. I've had a few other strange encounters with these forces over the years, but nothing quite like that sweltering Missouri night. Hopefully, never again either.
