Every time I think the New Madrid Fault cannot possibly do something I've never seen it do before this happens. There was just a strange earthquake felt by many in southwest Missouri today not that far from the Springfield area and I'm perplexed.

I knew something odd was going on as soon as I brought up the USGS earthquake page today. There was a decent sized circle in a part of Missouri that doesn't normally have quakes.

A 2.6 magnitude quake happened just east of Hartville, Missouri which is only an hour to the east of Springfield. You may have seen friends in southwest Missouri on social media saying they felt this quake even though it was minor. Several have officially notified the USGS that they felt it near Hartville.

It's the location in Missouri that's interesting

Missouri sees minor tremors and quakes from the New Madrid Seismic Zone all the time near the boot heel. North-central Arkansas also sees its fair share, but it's somewhat rare for south central Missouri to see a measurable earthquake that can be felt. It's nothing to worry about, but just another example of the New Madrid Fault surprising us. Now, let's just hope it doesn't have a major quake waiting for its next trick.
