Last week President Donald Trump selected Neil Gorsuch as his nominee for the one vacant spot on the Supreme Court. With all this talk about the Supreme Court, I thought it might be a good time to review just what the Court is all about. Thousands of cases are reviewed yearly by the Supreme Court of the United States, but very few people know much about the Court itself.

Did you know that anyone can become a Supreme Court Justice even if you are not a lawyer or even if you are not 21 years of age? With that said we have never had an under 21 year old on the bench and all justices so far first served as a lawyer. There are no term limits once you become a justice either.

Here are some other interesting facts about the Court. The Supreme Court has some 10,000 cases appealed to them every year. The high court hears some 75 to 80 cases a year. The Chief Justice, John Roberts, makes $260,700 a year with the other 8 justices each making $249,300. Each presenting attorney has a maximum of only 30 minutes to present his or her case to the Supreme Court justices.

The public is welcomed to attend the courtroom proceedings but only 100 to 150 seats are available on a first come-first served basis.  If you are lucky to get a seat, you will never see a TV camera in the court as the proceedings are never televised to discourage lawyers to playing to the camera or being influenced by the media attention.
