You might want to sit down for this. Have you received your electric bill yet this month? My Missouri bill that was formerly somewhat manageable has just exploded. Help.

The website Energy Sage says the "average" energy bill for a Missouri household is around $144 per month. Obviously, there are many variables including what temperature you put your air conditioner on, the size of your Missouri space that you need to cool, etc. However, that number has been pretty accurate for our Missouri home...until now.

I just got our Missouri bill (via email) this morning and the total electric bill due has TRIPLED. If you heard a loud sound in northeast Missouri this morning, that was my jaw hitting the floor when I saw that our electric bill was nearly $400.

I really hope that I'm the exception and not the rule. For the sake of comparison, my family keeps the thermostat around 72 to 74 during the daytime which doesn't seem outrageous to me.

The good news for you is that your mileage may vary. Our provider is Ameren (who I plan to have a conversation with) and my wife and kids do like cool temps to sleep in, but this is outrageous. I expected the bill would be in the $200's for the summer months especially with the recent heatwave. My expectations were obviously WAY too low.

Not to be an alarmist, but if you have yet to see your Missouri electric bill this month, prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Oh, and might want to consider bumping that thermostat up a few degrees. I know I will be doing that.
