The color or porch lights are sometimes for pure aesthetics, but it they can also be symbolic, too. If you see red porch lights in December in Missouri, it might not be because Christmas is near.

Let's start with what red porch lights almost certainly do NOT mean in Missouri. In some states, there are people that want to make a statement about their home being gun-free. Breaking News: this almost never happens in Missouri.

Light Bulbs.com has a helpful guide to the possible meaning of porch light colors. For example, purple porch lights can mean the person inside is showing support for domestic violence awareness. Pink porch lights are a common sign of breast cancer awareness. Green porch lights are often used in support of veterans. You'll see blue porch lights during Autism Awareness Month.

If not for Christmas, why would anyone in Missouri turn their porch lights red?

In Missouri, red porch lights are a common way to show support for firefighters.

This is an especially hot topic in Hannibal, Missouri right now after it was announced that the Huckleberry Park fire station would be closed indefinitely. I've heard many talking about ways to show support for the firefighters and this is a simple and visible way to do it.

Obviously, not all porch light colors are meant to be symbolic. I'd guess that many either just think the color is pretty or are trying to let their inner Clark Griswold shine.
