FDA, Walmart Sounds Alarm on Radioactive Shrimp in Missouri
I think that I have now officially heard everything it's possible to hear. In a wild bulletin shared by the FDA, there's a warning about radioactive shrimp being pulled from Missouri stores. Yes, radioactive shrimp.
This recall is being issued from two different places. The FDA has issued an advisory and there's also a warning from Walmart. Missouri is one of 13 states that are a part of this urgent product recall for potential radioactive shrimp. Here's what you need to look for:
- Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp, lot code: 8005540-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027
- Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp, lot code: 8005538-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027
- Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp, lot code: 8005539-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027
Why does the FDA worry this shrimp might be radioactive?
The bulletin says that the FDA is investigating Cesium-137 (Cs-137) contamination from a company in Indonesia that is responsible for these products that are carried by Missouri Walmart stores. They emphasize that there has not been any positive confirmation of radioactivity in the shrimp products yet, but they believe the areas they were packaged in are unsanitary and may be contaminated with this element.
What is Cesium-137 (Cs-137)?
The FDA says it is "a radioisotope of cesium that is man-made through nuclear reactions". It's a worldwide issue and is regularly tested by the FDA for its presence. The bottom line is the FDA says do not serve or eat any of these raw Great Value shrimp until they complete their investigation.
