Odd Missouri Tremor Tuesday Night in This Field Felt By Dozens
There are few things more unsettling as you're getting ready for bed late at night to suddenly feel an earthquake. That's exactly what happened new New Madrid, Missouri late Tuesday evening when a quake was strong enough to wake up nearly a dozen people.
I received a notification Tuesday night that the USGS had confirmed an odd quake near New Madrid, Missouri. Let's state the obvious that it is NOT odd for a quake in this part of Missouri, but the field it happened in is new. It's located just west of New Madrid in the middle of nowhere.
This is the view from the small road near that Missouri field.
It wasn't a strong quake by any means, but a 2.6 magnitude tremor managed to cause nearly a dozen people to contact the USGS and say "I felt that".
This quake got my attention especially considering there was a significant swarm that just happened Monday where the USGS confirmed 7 quakes within a short amount of time.
I normally don't bother sharing quakes below 3 in magnitude because even those rarely do any kind of damage. But, combined with the hyper activity at the start of the week, I thought this late night shaker was worth mentioning just in case the New Madrid Fault is preparing for a bigger event.
