Why Does FEMA Map Show So Many Nuke Targets in Illinois Now?
It's not a classified secret that Illinois would have several locations that would be prime targets for an enemy if the worst-case scenario nuclear exchange everyone fears ever becomes reality. However, there's a FEMA map that shows an alarming number of Illinois targets including many in the middle of nowhere.
I found this share on the appropriately named Oddly Terrifying sub-Reddit. It's a map created by FEMA showing likely nuclear targets in America. While you'd expect that the Chicago and St. Louis area would be a first-strike location, there are dozens in the middle of rural areas in Illinois.

Let's zoom in on the Illinois part. You'll notice many Illinois places that don't have any real strategic meaning (that I am aware of).
I can only speculate why areas in south-central Illinois are now included along with several also on the Illinois/Indiana border. The Quad Cities would likely be an effort to disrupt transportation across the river plus it's another population center. Chicago, the St. Louis area and Springfield are obvious first-strike scenario targets.
Let's face it. ANY type of nuclear exchange no matter how large or small would be a catastrophic life-changing event. However, I'm truly surprised to see so many Illinois places as estimated targets and that's saying something considering how many Tom Clancy novels I've read in my life.
