New Madrid Quake Hits Beneath Missouri’s Lake Wappapello
Here's a new one for you. When's the last time you remember a Missouri earthquake happening under a lake? That's just happened today as the USGS has confirmed one of the larger quakes of 2026 has happened underneath Wappapello Lake in Missouri.
Here's the epicenter shared by the USGS for this Friday morning quake
According to the USGS, this was a 2.6 magnitude earthquake that was reportedly felt. They said it was centered 12km to the east of Williamsville, Missouri. Considering the fact that this happened in such a remote western edge of Wappapello Lake, it's surprising that it was felt. Did a camper get a New Madrid Fault wakeup call?
A 2.6 magnitude quake is no big deal considering that's not nearly big enough to do any kind of damage, but it is on of the year's stronger New Madrid Fault quakes that I can recall with the largest being a magnitude 4 back in April near Cooter, Missouri. Today's quake means if you were standing approximately here looking out over Lake Wappapello Friday morning, your coffee cup would have been rattled a little bit.
Missouri sees small magnitude 1 or 2 quakes frequently, but they're much more common in the boot heel part of the state. Today's Lake Wappapello Lake tremor is just another reminder of how unpredictable the New Madrid Fault can be. That's why being earthquake-aware with an emergency plan is necessary every hour of every day.
