The state of Missouri is sounding the alarm about a sudden rise in drowning deaths across the state. State law enforcement have shared new numbers which reveal tragic outcomes for many in our waters.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol just shared a warning on their social media pages recently about a problematic increase in the number of drowning deaths they're seeing.
How many people drown in Missouri each year?
According to the latest data from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the number of drownings in the state varies from year-to-year anywhere from 27 up to 61 who drowned in 2021. The majority of victims are not wearing life jackets or any type of floatation devices, but that's not always the case. Law enforcement says that swimmers need to watch out for current, waves, rocks, vegetation, & drop offs and the advise that you always swim with a partner.
What should you do if you see someone in distress in the water?
If you have the ability to call authorities for help, do that. Experts say that if you believe someone is drowning, you should extend an object they can reach or throw a floatation device. That's the safest way to help someone avoid a tragedy without also becoming one yourself.
