There's been a movement to have snacks with certain additives banned and that's about to become a reality very soon in Missouri.

I had heard that this was being proposed, but I had no idea that it had been decided. I saw Dye Free Kids on Facebook mention Missouri had approved a ban, but since I don't trust social media, I looked for confirmation elsewhere and found it. According to Food Safety, it's a done deal. Here's what's going on:

As of January 1, 2027, four food additives—brominated vegetable oil (BVO), potassium bromate, propylparaben, and red dye 3 will be banned forever in Missouri. Specifically, the Missouri bill "prohibits any person or entity from manufacturing, selling, delivering, distributing , holding, or offing for sale a food product that contains brominated vegetable oil, potassium bromate, propylparaben, or red dye 3".

What snacks will be forbidden in Missouri starting in 2027?

  • Some citrus-flavored sodas
  • Strawberry flavors of Nesquik, Pediasure, Ensure, and Yoo-hoo
  • some baked goods like breads and tortillas
  • Wise onion rings
  • Some red coloring used in candies, icings, and some beverages

I also saw confirmation of this Missouri food additive ban from Newsweek which I consider to be a reliable source. Consumer Reports has been advocating for this ban (and others) for years, so it appears Missouri will be one of the first dozen states to put the food additive restrictions into action.
