Living on a Mississippi Island? It’s Possible—With a Catch
Is it really possible to live on an island in the Mississippi River? The short answer is yes, but it's complicated and the road to making it happen is beyond difficult.
My curiosity was peaked when I came across a "Luxury Living on Island in Mississippi River" thread on Reddit. It was a discussion about a Zillow listing for an "island" in the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, but that's not really the type of Mississippi Island living I was interested in. I was curious an island like the one that really was for sale in the Mississippi River in Iowa for $1.5 million last year.
There are many challenges to making an island home in the Mississippi River workable
- You have to figure out transportation to and from the island
- The Mississippi River is a constantly changing waterway with a history of record flooding
- You have to find private Mississippi River island land that is actually available
There is a controversial community that made Mississippi River island living a reality
Latsch Island in Minnesota is an off-the-grid tiny home community that more or less took over a Mississippi River island.
There's also Nicollet Island which is a large Mississippi River island that has a population of 144 at last count. That's more developed than most, but proof that Mississippi River island life is possible if not likely. You just have to be in the right place at the right time and have the right resources to make your river daydream a reality. Happy hunting.
