Largest Missouri Quake of 2026 Today, But No One Felt It
I'm genuinely surprised at this and I'm not the type of person who surprises easily. The USGS has confirmed that Missouri just had its largest quake of 2026 today, but not one single person apparently felt it.
When I checked out the USGS earthquake site today, I noticed a larger than normal dot in southern Missouri. It wasn't a major or even medium-sized quake, but it's currently the largest New Madrid Seismic Zone quake of 2026 so far. It's a 2.8 magnitude quake that happened Monday morning near Marston, Missouri. This list shows it's the largest tremor for this region so far this year.
If you look at the details of the quake, you'll see that no one reported feeling it. No, a 2.8 magnitude quake isn't large, but the USGS "felt report" shows that not one single person has come forward and claim they felt it and that almost always happens even even the tiniest of quakes hits the Missouri boot heel region.
So far it's been a very quiet year along the New Madrid Seismic Zone. There were only 6 confirmed quakes in February. There have already been a couple quakes in March, so it will be interesting to watch whether activity along that fault increases or stays relatively below the radar - just like the quake today that no one would have even known about if I hadn't brought it up.
