The Governor of Illinois announced his plans to repeal the state grocery tax but some towns in the Land of Lincoln are pushing back, saying "Keep the Tax"...why? Here are the details...

According to an article from WTTW, there are places in the state of Illinois that don't want the Governor to eliminate the Grocery Tax. We as citizens of Illinois want to get rid of the 1% grocery tax because every little bit helps with grocery prices skyrocketing, but Municipalities in the state are pushing back, in the article, they say...

"The Illinois Municipal League is asking mayors and local leaders to report the projected amount their towns would lose if the proposal becomes law, as a means of pressuring lawmakers to oppose the plan...When it comes to saving municipalities’ finances from the budget hit they would take if the grocery tax is wiped out, Pritzker said his as-yet-to-be-formally-introduced plan has another component: giving municipalities the option to impose their own sales tax on groceries."

So, if you and I are reading that correctly it seems as though the Governor will eliminate the statewide tax but eventually allow cities and municipalities the option to tax groceries locally if they so choose...What a mess...To read more on this, click here!

We can't win...

Taxpayers in the Land of Lincoln just can't win...We thought for half a second we would get a tiny 1% sales tax win but no, just watch as cities across the state implement their own tax and force locals to vote against the tax. Cities need to prioritize their budgets and make cuts, hopefully, the majority of cities won't implement their own grocery tax, but we will wait and see...
