Pyeongchang, South Korea is a long way to go for a Gold medal but it was worth the trip for Erin Hart of Pleasant Hill, Illinois. Erin won the Gold medal in the ladies figure skating competition at the Special Olympics World Winter Games.

Erin, who is 18 years of age and is autistic, started skating in 2011. She would travel to Springfield, Illinois for lessons and became so good at it her coach encouraged her to try out for the Special Olympics which she did. A year ago Erin won the Gold medal in the State Winter Games and then advanced to the World Games. In preparation for the world games, Erin spent some time training in Lake Placid, New York. From there it was on to South Korea.

Our friends at the Quincy Herald Whig published a wonderful story about Erin's journey to South Korea. I hope you get a chance to read it.

It's a long way from Pleasant Hill to Pyeongchang.  Congratulations to Erin on setting her sights high and accomplishing her goal of being the best figure skater in the world. She should be very proud of her accomplishment.
