I haven't received my annual property tax bill yet and I'm holding my breath. Can you imagine if you opened your mailbox and learned taxes on your home had jumped a remarkable 1,222%? That's what reportedly has just happened to some in Illinois.

I saw AOL share this disturbing story of what some residents in the Illinois county of Montgomery are experiencing. They say that Brandi Lentz paid $756 on her property last year. Take a wild guess what her property tax bill is this year? More than $10,000!

The article said that Montgomery County Assessor Kendra Niehaus confirmed this increase and said it was due to a "2007 state law that requires woodland tracts to be taxed like homes". From what she said, Montgomery County had not been executing that Illinois law correctly and landowners now have to pay 33.33% of what that land value is worth.

What this means is that many in that Illinois county could be in danger of losing their homes if they can't meet the required amounts for these property tax jumps. The state and the county allow for appeals, but they say that a quick resolution will be difficult.

It appears that the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners is trying to work with landowners in that Illinois county to find a solution, but as of right now it remains a mystery of how these Illinois homeowners are going to deal with an unthinkable jump in the property taxes they pay.
