One of the biggest, brightest and loudest meteors of the year was witnessed by hundreds over Illinois on Tuesday and there are videos that prove that the loud boom it caused was witnessed also.

I saw this major meteor event documented by the American Meteor Society that showed they received 158 reports including many that not only saw the big space rock, but heard it explode, too. Here are videos I've found that captured the moment it happened as witnessed across several states.

This video shared by KMOV in St. Louis I believe was from the perspective of someone in Illinois.

As it stands right now, this is one of the most widely-reported meteors of 2026 so far. The odd thing about this is that the Earth is not currently in the path of any major meteor shower as the next one, the Lyrids, aren't expected to peak until the middle of April. This is just another example of how a huge space rock can appear with no warning whatsoever and explode in our sky.
