Nature can be awe-inspiring. This is an example of that. There's a new video share of what happened when a mountain-size sheet of ice broke away from the Illinois coastline and floated off into Lake Michigan.

I saw this video just shared on the Illinois sub-Reddit. No, this is not a new event that just happened because the temperatures haven't been cold enough yet this winter to have this kind of ice along Lake Michigan in northern Illinois. According to the video, this was captured by WGN in Chicago years ago showing a massive ice sheet breaking off into Lake Michigan thanks to an incredible time-lapse video.

Based on what I can find, this happened during February in 2021 according to this share on YouTube.

It's not every day you get to see a 40-mile sheet of ice in motion like this. According to the forecast arctic cold that is said to be incoming to Illinois over the next couple of weeks, it will be interesting to see if this event gets replicated in February of 2025.
