This makes me wonder if there was some type of tank exercise at Ft Leonard Wood in Missouri today. According to seismologists with the USGS, there was a somewhat significant quake that was confirmed near this Missouri Army base today.

I knew something was up the moment I looked at the USGS earthquake site today. It was a Missouri quake in a weird part of the state where tremors don't normally happen. It's not like it was a strong destructive quake, but a 2.4 magnitude shaker isn't something insignificant either. It happened in the middle of the night around 1:34am Thursday, July 10.

If you zoom in, you'll see this New Madrid quake had an epicenter just west of Ft Leonard Wood. The star just south of I-44 is the quake and most of the shaded area is the military base.

We see small quakes like this in Missouri on almost a daily basis, but the vast majority happen in the boot heel part of the state. You rarely see New Madrid quakes this far north in Missouri although it's not unprecedented either. There are a handful each year that will be confirmed just south of St. Louis and several further south near Table Rock Lake. File this quake near Ft Leonard Wood under the strange category, but nothing worth losing any sleep about - yet.
