Why the US Army in Missouri is Getting Ready for Tornado Season
If you live in Missouri, you need to be prepared for tornado season, but there's a special reason why the US Army in the state is already getting ready for this year's twisters.
I saw this interesting article written by Melissa Buckley for Fort Leonard Wood about the Army's need to prepare for the upcoming tornado season in Missouri. If you're not aware, Fort Leonard Wood has been directly hit by several twisters over the years including a strong tornado on New Year's Eve 2010 when this big vortex hit the base.
She quoted Don Busbice Jr., U.S. Army Garrison Fort Leonard Wood safety director who remembered the EF-3 tornado that day as saying "This beast was on the ground for seven minutes and resulted in destroyed homes and the loss of half of the water treatment plant".
The US Army captured this picture taken from a Blackhawk helicopter showing damage the twister did to the motor pool on the base that day.
Stan Siepka captured video of the December 31, 2010 tornado that hit Fort Leonard Wood as the vortex passed very close to the building he was in.
Yes, all of us in Missouri need to be prepared for the upcoming Spring tornado season, but it becomes all the more urgent when you live in a place that's been hit directly by a large twister. Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri remembers that truth all too well more than 13 years later.
