I have heard whispers today that some of my friends in the St. Louis, Missouri area think they felt an earthquake, but there have been few official reports. I've been able to confirm they are correct.

As soon as I heard talk of a St. Louis area earthquake, I immediately beamed over to the USGS earthquake page to see if there were any reports. Thankfully, I have friends at the USGS willing to communicate with me who could confirm that what my St. Louis friends felt was really an earthquake.

It was no big shake, but a 2.3 earthquake this close to St. Louis is worth paying attention to. You don't often see Herculaneum, Missouri listed as an epicenter for an earthquake. The funny thing is there have apparently been social media mentions, but no one has taken the time to let the USGS know they felt it.

The New Madrid Seismic Zone has been relatively quiet in 2025 so far as this is one of the strongest quakes of the year, but that's not saying much considering we're less than 10 days in.

We also know that the USGS has told us the New Madrid Fault is capable of a stronger than 7 magnitude quake at some point in our lifetime. As every year goes by, that chance grows. Let's hope that 2025 is not the year that kind of major event becomes a reality.
