Confirmed 200 Yard Wide Tornado at Marceline, Illinois Saturday
Most residents in west-central Illinois likely had no idea there was a dangerous storm moving through the area overnight early Saturday morning. But, weather survey teams have confirmed there was a 200 yard wide tornado that struck near Marceline, Illinois.
I was surprised to see this National Weather Service report as I had no idea that tornadic storms had moved through the area and I'm likely not alone. According to the National Weather Service weather story, the tornado touched down around 2:14 am near Marceline, Illinois.
If you're not familiar with the area, Marceline is located due north of Quincy.
The National Weather Service had a survey team assessing the damage early Sunday morning and added these details:
A tornado developed just southwest of the town in the early morning hours of August 5th. The maximum estimated wind speed was 90 mph with an EF-1 rating.
Fortunately, it appears the only damage was to a few buildings, power lines and crops. Tornadoes that strike in the overnight hours are the most dangerous since most resident are asleep and have little if any warning that a dangerous storm is nearby.
