Central Park in Hannibal Getting a Facelift
If you noticed some additional activity in Central Park in Hannibal yesterday you saw the start of a project to help beautify the park for the summer ahead. A sandblasting project is underway at the Central Park fountain and is being done by Tri-State Sandblasting. Personnel from the Hannibal Parks & Recreation Department will paint the fountain once the sandblasting is completed. Once that concludes they will move onto the War Memorial where Mike Bush of Tri-State Sandblasting will donate his services to renovate the memorial.
The War Memorial will also be re-painted and some 5000 names on eight metal plaques, which have faded with time, will be restored. The restoration project began to restore the metal plaques after a fundraising effort by the Hannibal Parks & Recreation department raised some $12-thousand.
The War Memorial was erected by the Service Mothers of World War II and the Emmett J. Shields Post 55 of the American Legion and was dedicated in 1962.
