Odd New Madrid Quake Shakes Lake Near Cape Girardeau, Missouri

When it comes to unusual behavior, the New Madrid Fault keeps topping itself. After a weekend shaker near Lake Wappapello, now there's been another odd quake near a tiny lake in Cape Girardeau.

The USGS earthquake site shows yet another New Madrid Fault quake today

The USGS shows that this very minor 1.9 magnitude quake had an epicenter in the northwest part of Cape Girardeau, Missouri just to the east of this small lake/pond/whatever you want to call this body of water.

The good news is this quake was so insignificant that no one in Cape Girardeau, Missouri has reported having felt this quake at the time of this writing. This is another case of the size of the quake not being interesting, but the location certainly is. I could count the number of New Madrid Seismic Zone quakes that have had a center near Cape Girardeau over the past few years on one hand. This combined with the strange Lake Wappapello quake over the weekend now makes me curious what the earthquake fault in southern Missouri is up to. The answer is probably nothing, but it's good to be aware of what the New Madrid Fault is doing. Sooner or later, we'll probably be dealing with the significant quake the USGS has warned us about. Fortunately, this Cape Girardeau quake isn't even close to being it.
