I asked some of my college friends what advice they would give themselves if they could talk to themselves as freshmen. Check out what they had to say!

  • “Be open minded to new experiences and friends, you don’t know the connections and friendships you’ll make for a lifetime”
  • “No matter what you deal with, stay in college. It’s a lot harder going back after taking time off than you’d realize”
  • “Try your hardest in all of your classes, because it will pay off in the long run! But also make sure to take breaks and spend time with your friends so you don’t burn out”
  • “Your life will change a lot more than you think the next four years—embrace every change with a positive attitude and accept it!”
  • “Read your textbooks and study your notes for more than just a good grade”
  • “Get involved! Getting involved makes the transition to college so much more bearable!”
  • “’Attend,’ participate, and build essential skills/knowledge. Take risks!”
  • “If you’re not excited to go to classes in your major, change your major. It’s not right for you”
  • “It’s okay to say no—you don’t have to be a super human your freshman year. Don’t agree to more than you can handle and don’t take on too much at one time! Set goals and prioritize”
  • “GO OUTSIDE. DO STUFF. DON’T HERMIT. BAD.” (Fittingly enough, this advice came from someone with the nickname “Groot”)
  • “Go to class”
  • “Have more study groups. It might sound dumb, but you get more done when there are more people around to motivate you”
  • “Don’t just bring one towel. Bring two towels. Rotate one in the dirty laundry. Also, bring power strips”
  • “Ask for help and ask often. You don’t have to do everything alone. If things get too difficult, it’s okay to reach out. It doesn’t make you weak; it makes you stronger for being brave enough to ask”
  • “Don’t be afraid to cut ties with the people who aren’t helping you grow. College is about growth, and it’s okay to be selective of who you hang out with”
  • “Take a shower before class”
  • “Write down what the professor says as well as the notes he or she writes. One is not more important than the other”
  • “When your friends try to invite you to events and to the café, go ahead and go. Don’t stay in your room and isolate the entire time. Enjoy your time at college”
  • “Think before you make any choices. People will try to rush you to pick something whether it’s a fraternity, an expensive trip, a class, etc. Take a moment and think about your options in any given scenario and make wise choices over hasty ones…Thinking saves you time and money in the long run”
