You could stare at the night sky and never see the type of phenomenon that just appeared over Wyanet, Illinois. It looked like a long beam of light and there are theories about what it might have been, but no solid answers just yet.

Huge thank you to Kaurie Lynn from Wyanet, Illinois who just captured this video and photos of what she saw on Saturday, October 7, 2023. Wyanet, Illinois is due north from Peoria, by the way. I saw Kaurie's share on the Illinois Storm Community Facebook page and reached out to her and she kindly allowed me to share her pics and video.

The theories shared in the comments about what Kaurie saw have varied wildly from what is known as a S.T.E.V.E. which stands for Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement. In short, it's a remnant of a strong solar storm. Others believe this was a light pillar. If that's the case, it's odd the light doesn't extend all the way to the ground, but appears to be in the upper atmosphere.

Kaurie added an interesting note. She said that residents in nearby Princeton, Illinois reportedly heard booms once the light pillar went away.

Here are the pics Kaurie Lynn shared with me to share with you.
